Wales beat Norway 2–1, the first lay of the new book is paid, and the ledger opens at plus €980. Today we lay France at 1.50: €500 at risk to win €980, break-even 33.8%.

One position, one win, plus €980. Norway took the lead through Oscar Bobb, Daniel James equalised before the break, Norway went down to ten and Neco Williams won it three minutes into the second half. Tonight France host Italy at the Stade de France at 1.50 on the exchange. Six points from six against Italy’s three. We need the draw or an Italian win 33.8% of the time; the market, margin removed, gives them 33.2%.

§The Commentary

The first lay of the new book is paid. Norway were 1.49 in Cardiff and went ahead after ten minutes through Oscar Bobb, which is roughly what a 1.49 price looks like in practice. Daniel James levelled on 38 minutes. Torbjørn Heggem was sent off a minute after the restart, and Neco Williams scored two minutes later. Wales 2, Norway 1: an outright upset, €980 collected against €490 at risk. One position, one win. It would be easy to read something into it and it would be wrong; the result needed a red card, and a single match settles nothing about whether favourites are mispriced.

Today the position is a lay of France at 1.50: €500 at risk to win €980. The shape is the same friendly one as yesterday — a win pays nearly twice what a loss costs — which is why break-even sits at 33.8%. France have six points from two, 1–0 at home to Turkey and a late 1–0 in Belgium. Italy lost 2–0 in Brussels and then won 4–1 in Turkey. Strip the margin off the back column — 1.48 France, 5.2 the draw, 7.0 Italy, an overround of 101.1% — and the fair line reads 66.8% / 19.0% / 14.1%. The two results that pay us add to 33.2%. We need 33.8%. Six tenths of a point against us, about €9 of negative expectation on the position. The crack is in the scorelines: France have won both matches by a single goal, and a team that wins 1–0 is never far from a draw.

The honest case against this lay is that France are not being overpriced on name alone. They are unbeaten in the group, have not conceded, and play at home against a side that lost its opening match. Italy’s four goals in Turkey say they can score; their two conceded in Belgium say they can also be outplayed. At 1.50 the market asks France to win two times in three, and nothing on the evidence calls that number generous. We are six tenths of a point short and say so. Two positions in, the ledger is plus €980 — a number that means as little as yesterday’s result, and will be published just the same if tonight goes the other way.
